The UK motorcycle industry has long made the case for motorcycling in transport, environmental and business policy. As a £7.2billion industry, employing 62,000 people in over 6,000 businesses, it is clear that the motorcycle sector is a notable contributor to the UK economy.
The motorcycle industry needs recognition and support if it is to realise its full potential and fully contribute to the UK’s economic recovery. In addition to a properly balanced Government transport policy and rider licensing policy, the industry needs to be recognised by other Government departments such as the Business Innovation and Skills Department and included in the Government’s policy making mechanisms.
But why should the Government and broader society take notice of the motorcycle industry? Because we are an industry which is well placed to deliver support for and progress towards national political and social goals such as improving road safety, a rebalanced economy, improved mobility, crime reduction and social inclusion.
The industry’s Policy Framework for Motorcycling sets out how government and social policies which recognise and support the motorcycle industry can help achieve broader national goals.
The Framework presentation is supported by short factsheets which provide further detail on each national goal. Further supporting information will accompany these factsheets in the coming weeks – so watch this space!
MCI will underpin its policy activities with the Framework during 2012. The Framework does not mark a change of MCI policy but illustrates why these issues matter - not just to the motorcycle industry, but the to the nation - and how society as a whole can benefit from Government support for industry policies.
