European Safer Urban Motorcycling
The MCI joined forces with Transport for London (TfL) and other similar organisations in major European cities at a special eSum (European Safer Urban Motorcycling) Summit, to share expertise and find ways of improving the safety of motorcyclists in the capital.
The result is a Good Practice Guide for safer motorcycling, which is now available on line for use by engineers, road designers and road safety practitioners throughout Europe.
Ensuring motorcyclists can use the capital's roads safely is a key part of the Mayor's aim of reducing congestion and emissions on London's roads, by encouraging more people to take to two wheels. The on-line tool-kit describes actions which are effective in cutting motorcycle casualties on city routes. The six key themes are:
- Training and Awareness
- Highways Features and Policy
- Targeted Enforcement
- Specific Highway Remedial Measures
- Powered Two Wheeler Design and Protective Equipment
- 'Softening' the Highway Infrastructure
