The event for 15 to 17 year olds at Brooke Weston Academy in Corby has been organised by Northamptonshire Highways, working with the Motorcycle Industry Association
Run by the county council’s Road Safety Team, the programme consists of a classroom educational workshop, a driving lesson in a car with a qualified instructor and a motorcycle lesson with a qualified instructor.
Cllr Ian Morris, county council cabinet member for transport, highways and environment, said: “This is a great way for young people to get experience of riding a motorbike or driving a car in a safe and controlled way.
“By instilling good habits in a positive way the sessions will help school pupils understand what constitutes good driving and riding, which is obviously hugely beneficial for when they start taking lessons on the public highway.”
Jenny Luckman, Programme Manager, for the MCIA, who will be working with the road safety team for the full three days said: “We are delighted to be working with Northamptonshire County Council and Brooke Weston Academy on this forward thinking three day road user education event.
"Giving young people the opportunity to experience the road from a multi user perspective is a highly effective way to make sure that whatever mode of transport they use in the future - they can 'see' other road users. 'Failure to see' is the major cause of accidents and one which has a greater impact for vulnerable road users such as motorcyclists and cyclists."
"The MCIA recently released a white paper, written with partners Highways England and the National Police Chiefs' Council which calls for a number of actions to improve safety for motorcyclists. These include embedding road safety into the curriculum, exemplified in well-structured events like this.”
