MCI consultant wins award for service to industry

The MCI’s technical consultant, Tom Waterer (centre) has been honoured with an ‘Outstanding Service Award’, which was presented last night at the British Dealer News Industry Awards 2014. The award was presented ‘in recognition of a lifetime of outstanding service to the motorcycle industry’ by MotoGP commentator Steve Parrish, who hosted the evening. Tom began his career in the industry nearly 50 years ago, working in dealerships. He became apprenticed at BSA in 1968, graduating from Birmingham Polytechnic in 1971.  Following four years working as a rep for Norton Villiers Europe, Tom was offered the post of National Sales Manager at Suzuki GB and remained in that position until 1986. He then joined the MCI as Technical Officer, then Assistant Director, later becoming Executive Director. From 1998 to semi-retirement in 2011, Tom concentrated on technical matters as Director for Technical and Legislative Affairs.  He continues to work for the MCI as a consultant, lending his considerable experience in interpreting complex issues for members, such as ‘type approval’. Last night’s award was a complete surprise to Tom, who was joined by colleagues and his wife Vivienne, who had managed to keep the presentation secret.
