The eMCI hopes the more detailed announcement, due in the Autumn, will include concrete news of subsidy for people wanting to buy electric and ultra-low emission motorcycles, scooters and mopeds – not just cars. Electric motorcycles must also be properly catered for in new and existing charging infrastructure.
The eMCI cautions that although the announced funding for EVs should help cut the UK’s transport CO2 emissions, it will to nothing to reduce the country’s appalling levels of urban congestion. Indeed the current proposals suggest a desire to see petrol and diesel fuelled jams being replaced by electric powered jams, with millions being wasted in lost productivity every day.
All powered two-wheelers (PTWs) have the advantage of helping to reduce congestion, and so OLEV’s support of ultra low emission and electric PTWs would present a double benefit to UK plc. It is also important therefore, that any money available for research and development for ‘greener’ vehicle technology should also be available to manufacturers of powered two-wheelers.
Low emission and electric PTWs represent a huge opportunity for Government to realise its transport policy objectives. It is time that OLEV finally took proper steps to realise that opportunity.
