Small Business Saturday is a grassroots campaign, which is being championed by BIS, the Department for Business Innovations and Skills. BIS urge small businesses not currently involved, to seize this date as an opportunity to talk to customers, plan events and publicise special deals in partnership with local media The idea originated in the US, where ‘Small Business Saturday’ is a commercial holiday. Last year this generated $5.5 billion in sales. This is the first time it has taken place in the UK and a number of events are already planned, many of which tie in with Christmas. Local councils, small business organisations and even banks will be active in promoting Small Business Saturday and there is a Facebook page and Twitter feed, devoted to publicising events in the run up to the day.
