MCIA has taken a proactive stance in advocating for the L-Category sector's sustainable evolution.

When it comes to the sale of new non-zero emission L-Category vehicles, our contribution to the Government’s consultation carries a vital message: any transition must accommodate the unique challenges faced by our sector.

Unveiling Our Commitment: The Joint Action Plan

At MCIA, we're committed to combatting climate change and reducing emissions alongside the Government. Our shared dedication is epitomised in our collaborative effort with the Government via the Action Plan, "Realising the Full Potential of Zero Emission Powered Light Vehicles". We're steering our industry toward greener horizons.

Less than 0.5% Emissions: A Sector of Promise

The L-Category sector, responsible for emitting less than 0.5% of the UK's total domestic transport emissions, deserves recognition. Our comprehensive lifecycle analysis demonstrates that L-Category vehicles are more eco-friendly than various transport modes, including electric cars. Our impact is minimal, and the approach to phasing us out should reflect that.

Preserving a Sustainable Legacy

Swiftly phasing out our sector risks damaging a mode of travel that's ecologically sound. The UK Government's Transport Decarbonisation Plan recognised our pivotal role in the future of transportation. Rushed phase-out jeopardises manufacturers' UK presence and endangers our significant contribution to the economy.

Beyond One-Size-Fits-All: Embracing Diversity

Government proposals must acknowledge the diversity within the L-Category sector. What suits one segment might not fit another. We urge consideration of feasibility for various vehicles, ensuring that potential change doesn't undermine our industry's complexity.

Staying Open to Possibilities: Alternative Fuels

While electric powertrains have their merits, they're not universally suitable. MCIA champions technology neutrality in pursuing alternative powertrains. Low carbon/synthetic fuels hold potential, protecting segments where electric transition within the proposed timeframe isn't viable.

A Thoughtful Timeline: Protecting What Matters

MCIA proposes an alternative timeline for ending the sale of non-zero emission L-Category vehicles.

Our timeline respects design intricacies, curbing market damage while addressing CO2 reduction. We call for readiness checks, ensuring infrastructure aligns with Government targets.

Walking the Talk: Continued Advocacy

Beyond consultation, MCIA remains engaged with the Department for Transport. Our Chief Executive, Tony Campbell, participated in a crucial roundtable alongside industry members and stakeholders in June 2023. Our goal is clear: advocating for proportionality and technology neutrality.

Empowering Stakeholders: Communication Toolkit

We're empowering industry stakeholders and parliamentarians with a comprehensive toolkit to spotlight concerns tied to the proposed changes. Our collective voice amplifies our cause, safeguarding the L-Category sector's vibrant future.

Join us on this journey toward a sustainable and thriving future. Together, we're steering the L-Category sector toward new horizons.
